French butterfly collector Thierry Heitzmann and his Filipina wife Elizabeth are preparing for the big event- the official opening of the Philippines first butterfly farm. "The Butterfly House" in suburban Quezon City is actually a 150 square metre butterfly farm. Ardyam Koi Farm is a privately-owned 3 hectare farm land located in Central Luzon initially developed for personal and family recreation only, but as time goes-by and the fishes grew in numbers, the owners decided to share and sell their fishes to their fellow koi lovers. To make expensive Japanese Koi (Nishikigoi) fishes affordable to everyone is what Ardyam Koi Farm’s intention is. This is the same reason why they are one of the few koi sellers who have the cheapest and most affordable Kois for sale in the market without sacrificing quality. You can buy and own a premium quality Koi fish for as low as 45 pesos. (Now that’s what you call affordable!) Ardyam Koi Farm (AKF) fishes is available for sale in the following areas: AKF Valenzuela Distribution Center, Kabesang Imo st., Valenzue...
Bahay Kubo Organics (BKO) is a social enterprise based in the Metro Manila area whose aim is to develop self-sustaining and healthy communities through urban farms and social innovation. They aim to develop a community of urban growers who farm organic produce and seek to spread the use of aquaponic technology in the Philippines. Founded by Enzo Pinga, Ryan Aguas and Illian Pascual in 2012, the childhood friends were in the USA when they decided to return to the Philippines to start something that could help fellow countrymen alleviate malnutrition and food scarcity. I had the chance to visit one of their aquaponics farms, where you'll see a system that involves the cultivation of fish and plants, where one produces nutrients to nourish and sustain the other. In addition to farming orga...

Not knowing very much about the Philippines before I visited, I was pleasantly surprised by Manila and Subic and how they both reminded me of America. The highlight of the trip was getting a chance to visit a Vietnamese boat people refugee camp near Baataan. I met some friendly Pinoys too. The food was great. The transportation readily available. And the landscape extremely beautiful. There are plenty to see and do as well. -------------------------------------------------- About Me: I'm Kyle Le and I live, travel, and eat in Vietnam and many Asian countries. I've traveled everywhere in Vietnam, from Hanoi to Saigon - Far North, Central Highlands, Islands, and Deep Mekong Delta - I've visited there. In addition to ...

How to behave in social situations in Manila. Here are a few customs and etiquette to be aware of during your visit to the Phillipines. Filipinos value honor. The concept of hiya or shame requires one to behave in a manner that will not shame the person or the family. Handshake is common when meeting someone. If elders are present, acknowledge them first. Address people formally indicating their profession or using their last names. In discussions Filipinos tend to be non-confrontational. People will not directly say no. In making appointments, Filipinos tend to be more forgiving. If you arrive 15 to 20 minutes late, unless you are attending a business function. If you ever receive a gift, open it afterwards, not in front of the person who gave it to you. When it comes to tipping, 10 pe...

Johnny De Jesus is a typical Canadian teen-ager; despondent, rebellious, and has no regard for his family. When the De Jesus-Reyes family gets word that their family matriarch, Lola (Grandmother) Nena has died, Johnny, and his prissy older sister Anna are in charge of representing their parents in Manila for the reading of their Lola's last will and testament. Johnny, a first time balikbayan, sees Manila with foreign eyes; from the poorest squatters to the richest of the gated village mansions. Johnny is introduced to his cousin Vanessa, a Manila junior socialite who shares Johnny's taste for drugs and trouble. At the reading of the will the three grandchildren of Lola Nena are awarded the deed to the family farm in rural Bulacan. A bumpy two-hour ride out of the city, shuttled by their f...
